Home / Blog / PVC Stair Nosing Guide
Stair edges take more punishment than any other part of a floor, and they are where most slip accidents start. A correctly specified stair nosing protects the vinyl sheet edge, adds grip, and makes the stair look like part of the same floor system. This guide walks through what to check before you send your RFQ.
Flexible PVC nosing suits homogeneous sheet — it heat-welds or glues to the same color so the transition is seamless. For SPC planks or very heavy commercial traffic, a rigid film-coated nosing holds its shape better under impact. Decide which floor you are installing first, then match the nosing family.
Standard PVC stair nosing is 40–60 mm wide, supplied in 2.0 m lengths (rigid versions up to 2.4 m). For long stair runs, order cut-to-length pieces — it reduces joints and looks cleaner than butting standard lengths.
| Parameter | Typical range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 40–60 mm | Must fully cover the step edge over the sheet thickness |
| Length | 2.0 / 2.4 m or custom | Fewer joints = cleaner stair and less risk of lifting |
| Thickness (rigid) | 8–12 mm | Deeper profile for high-impact corridors and stairs |
A ribbed or grooved surface profile is what stops slips on wet or polished stairs. Anti-slip performance is rated R9–R11 under DIN 51130 — R9 for dry interiors, R10–R11 for wet or polished stairs such as hospital and school entrances. In those settings, anti-slip nosing is often a safety-code requirement, not an option. Check the profile surface and its R rating before you choose a color.
Tell the supplier the sheet color — good manufacturers match nosing, skirting, capping and cove to the same shade, so the whole installation reads as one system. Ordering accessories from the same factory that makes the sheet is the simplest way to guarantee the match.
Typical MOQs are 300–500 pieces for nosing, with 3-7 days lead time. For a hospital or mall project, share the stair count and sheet color up front — it lets the factory pre-cut lengths and batch the color run with your flooring order.
Stair nosing only performs as part of the full floor. See our homogeneous sheet installation guide for how the sheet is laid and welded before the nosing goes on.

Yes. Order nosing from the same factory that makes the sheet and it is color-matched to the same shade, so the whole installation reads as one system.
